In print culture, “acid” most often refers to paper acidity. Acidic paper, common in many 19th and 20th century publications made from wood pulp, yellows and becomes brittle over time because acids accelerate fibre breakdown. This is why archives and libraries prefer acid-free, often alkaline-buffered paper for long-term preservation. “Acid” can also refer to plate making and intaglio processes, where an acid bath etches a metal plate (or a resist-coated plate) to create printable recesses, a technique used in etching and some photomechanical methods.

Acid

In letterpress printing, a font (often “fount”) is a physical, counted stock of type: individual metal or wood sorts of one typeface, one style, and one size, supplied in specific quantities, along with spaces and quads, stored in the type case. You compose text by hand from these pieces, so production is limited by what you physically have. If you run out of a letter, you cannot keep setting until you redistribute type or obtain more sorts.

In type design and graphic design today, a font is the usable instance of a typeface, usually a digital file that defines the shapes of characters plus the technical instructions that make them work: encoding, OpenType features, spacing, kerning, metrics, and supported scripts. A typeface is the broader design system or family (across weights and styles), while fonts are the individual styles you select and deploy, like Regular, Italic, Bold, or variable fonts.

A machine used in hot-metal type production to cast printing type from molten metal. Depending on the system, it can cast individual sorts (as in type foundry casters) or cast entire lines of type as a single “slug” (as in linecasting systems like Linotype) or individual characters on demand (as in Monotype). Casting machines mechanised and sped up type production, standardised sizes and quality, and made it possible to rapidly supply fonts for letterpress printing.

In typography, a point is the smallest unit of measure, used to define font size, leading, and other layout elements. In modern digital publishing, one point is standardized as 1/72 of an inch (approximately 0.353 mm). Historically, it represented the height of the metal body on which a character was cast, rather than the size of the individual letter itself.

Point

A method of setting type that uses a photographic process to project character images from a film negative or disk onto light-sensitive paper or film. Popular in the mid-20th century, it offered significant advantages over hot-metal typesetting, such as increased speed and flexibility in font sizing, before it was superseded by digital desktop publishing.
