The Cairo Reading Club in Visual Culture — 26 Cohort

The Cairo Reading Club on Visual Culture is a new program initiated by the Arabic Design Archive and led by our founder Moe Elhossieny who is partnering with Seham Shahin, an archivist and writer working at the intersections of alternative and counter-archival practices, sound, and cinema. The club is dedicated to collective reading, critical discussion, and knowledge production around Arab and Global South visual cultures.

Over the duration of a year-long program, monthly sessions will take place. This years cohort have been selected through a rigiros interview process and was aimed to gather together a diverse group of people from writers, designers, researchers, and cultural practitioners to engage with texts on design, image-making, archives, modernity, colonialism, and visual politics.

The project conceives of reading as a shared cultural practice: a way to slow down, debate, translate, question, and build new frameworks for thinking about visual culture from the region and beyond.
